In 1981 Polruan Age Concern, in an effort to raise some funds, suggested an Old Time Musical at the Village Hall. An initial meeting was called and a group of about 30 put on The Good Old Days in May of that year. Subsequently a management committee was elected and Polruan Theatre Club was born..
Back then we had only a small platform in the Village Hall to perform on and little or no equipment but over the years we have enlarged the stage, built dressing rooms and installed excellent stage lighting, sound and supporting equipment.
We are fortunate in Polruan to have a number people who in their past lives have been associated with the theatre in some way and also a number of people who, having come to live in the village, have discovered a latent talent for the theatre. This combination has enabled us to present a varied programme of serious plays, comedies and reviews. We have a committed group of actors, directors, stage managers, designers and builders as well as an expert front-of-house team who all combine to give a consistently high standard of theatre. Of course, we are always looking for new talent in any field of theatre and have recently formed a Children's Section to encourage interest in our younger population.
Each year we usually present three productions – Winter, Spring ( as part of the Du Maurier Arts Festival), and Summer.
We believe that active theatre can greatly enhance the quality of village life as well as give a source of high-quality entertainment to the wider public.
Polruan Theatre Club is one of the many groups in Cornwall affiliated to the Cornwall Drama Association.
The CDA provides a wide range of services - including play adjudication - and hosts a website which provides much useful information about the local am dram scene.
